NASA’s four-member Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) crew completed its simulated Mars journey on Oct. 31, 2026, and posed outside the habitat for the first time in more than a year.
Matthew Montgomery, James Spicer, Ross Elder and Ellen Ellis spent the mission testing systems, maintaining crops, managing limited resources and coping with communication delays. They also conducted extravehicular activities as part of the effort to examine how crews adapt to extended stays in space-like conditions.
NASA said the crew’s experiences will provide insights for designing a future Moon Base and planning missions to Mars.
