Dr Siddhartha Roy has received the 2026 Maddox Prize, which recognises people who defend science and evidence despite hostility or other challenges. Roy was a third-year PhD student when he joined scientists who publicly disputed state and federal assurances that Flint, Michigan’s water was safe after it was contaminated with dangerous levels of lead.
Roy initially became a local hero for speaking out. His standing later changed when new research challenged the claim that children in Flint had suffered permanent brain damage because of the crisis. Roy maintained his commitment to the evidence, even when it upset people, and says his work cost him friendships.
In a Guardian podcast interview with Ian Sample, Roy reflects on his experience in Flint and the personal consequences of his work.
