People using GLP-1 medications for obesity reported changes in their food-buying habits, according to a Bain study published on November 3. The treatments include Wegovy and Mounjaro, which belong to a class of drugs that can reduce appetite.
In the United States, more than 4,000 GLP-1 users were surveyed. On average, they said their spending had fallen by 6% on bread and bakery products, desserts, confectionery and biscuits; by 5% on salty snacks; and by 4% on carbonated drinks and sodas. The study reported a similar pattern in Europe.
In the United Kingdom, where 7% of adults have used GLP-1 treatments, spending on those categories fell by as much as 10%. Meanwhile, purchases of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and poultry, as well as dietary supplements and vitamins, rose by between 2% and 4%, depending on the category.
