Marvel Studios has launched its existential superhero series VisionQuest on Disney+, marking the conclusion of a groundbreaking trilogy that started with 2021's WandaVision and continued with the 2024 follow-up Agatha All Along. Created by Terry Matalas, known for Star Trek: Picard and 12 Monkeys, the show explores the complex life of Vision, played by Paul Bettany, through eight scheduled episodes released in pairs every Tuesday night.
To fully grasp the narrative, viewers must understand the events leading up to this series. The storyline begins with Avengers: Infinity War (2018), where Thanos kills Vision by removing his Mind Stone. This tragedy sets the stage for WandaVision, which introduces two distinct versions of the android: White Vision, a synthezoid rebuilt by S.W.O.R.D., and Hex Vision, a supernatural manifestation created by Wanda Maximoff's magic. By the end of that series, these two entities merge, with Hex Vision restoring White Vision's lost memories. Consequently, the character appearing in VisionQuest is the physical body of White Vision infused with the thoughts and remembrances of the magically resurrected model.
The show delves deeper into Vision's psyche by introducing various AIs residing within his skull as human avatars. These include J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark's former AI butler, and E.D.I.T.H., the artificial intelligence from Spider-Man: Far From Home. Most significantly, the series reveals that Ultron was not destroyed in Avengers: Age of Ultron; instead, Vision copied his code and absorbed him. Now, Ultron exists within Vision's mind, creating a dynamic described as a sequel to both Age of Ultron and WandaVision simultaneously.
A central plot point involves Vision's relationship with his son, Tommy Maximoff. Although Tommy and his brother Billy vanished when Wanda's Hex collapsed in 2021, Agatha All Along explained that their consciousnesses entered the ether before reemerging in the souls of two deceased teenage boys. VisionQuest picks up on this dangling plot thread to explore the father-son dynamic between Vision and the returned Tommy.
Beyond internal conflicts, Vision faces external threats as a fugitive with a bounty on his head after escaping S.W.O.R.D.'s control. The series introduces new antagonists, including Paladin, a mysterious mercenary played by Todd Stashwick who was originally created for Marvel Comics in 1978. Additionally, the show features Jocasta, Ultron's "bride," though her MCU portrayal diverges significantly from her comic book origins. The cast also includes Ruaridh Mollica, T'Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Orla Brady, Diane Morgan, Polly Frame, Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, Emily Hampshire, and James D'Arcy.
