Nature’s science-fiction story “The oracle of the second quadrant” follows Jerry, a 19-year-old seeking an exact explanation for why Clara, the butcher’s daughter, left him. She had described their relationship as having a “fundamental misalignment” in their vectors, a phrase Jerry wants the fairground’s Differential Analytical Oscillator to decode.

The machine’s operator, Silas, offers Jerry a full analysis. Wearing a heavy helmet connected to the boiler, Jerry hears a stream of data instead of receiving a vision or emotional explanation. The machine traces tiny changes in Clara’s gait to humidity and her boot, then links Jerry’s body odour to his sweat, a porch railing and the breeze that carried the scent.

The account continues through physical measurements and environmental effects, reducing the breakup to a chain of minute variables. When the helmet is pulled away, the machine is smoking and its violet glow has faded. The story is published as part of Nature Futures.
